It’s been too long…Here’s Artemis for you

It's been 84 years

You guys! I’m so sorry. So much for being a frequent updater! I’ve started a new job and it’s been CRAZY!!! Which means that I haven’t done much in the way of reading a physical book but I WAS able to finish an audio book! Woo!

ArtemisBook

It’s funny. I started this as a hardcover and I was bored. To. Death. So I stopped reading it. Finally went back to Club Lib (AKA the library) and decided to do the audio book version. Lo and behold, it’s being narrated by ROSARIO DAWSON (!!!!!) and so of COURSE I grab it! Let me tell you: SO. MUCH. BETTER!!!!! Rosario NAILS every voice and inflection and does so good with all the different accents. I’m also a HUGE HUGE fan of hers so I was ecstatic to listen to her read this. I would sometimes just sit in the car JUST to listen because she made it that much better!

So. The book. It was really good! I really like The Martian (the movie, I actually didn’t read the book, but I heard it was really close so that was nice) and so I figured I would like this one too. Like I said, in the beginning I was very bored. I couldn’t stand Jazz and the all consuming slowness of the plot. But once everything really got going, man, did it snowball quick.

I have more of this review here and you can check out the book’s synopsis here. I definitely recommend it to those who love sci-fi and bad ass women.

The Strange Case of the Alchemist’s Daughter by Theodora Goss

1strangecasemain

Ok so this book. This book. Where do I even start? I think my favorite thing about this book was my little *gasp* every time a new character was introduced. Mary Jekyll? *gasp!* Sherlock Holmes and Doctor John Watson? *gasp!* Diana Hyde? *gasp!* The list goes on and on and each time I would gasp or giggle in delight. And really, with the time that this was taking place in (Late 19th Century) the premise that the women really held their own was quite fascinating.

As someone who has read many of the classics brought to life by the characters (Frankenstein, The Island of Dr. Moreau, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Dracula, to name a few) this was utterly amazing. I think Goss did a great job with tying in the ACTUAL stories into the women’s stories and making them more complete. Listening to the audio book was especially great, the narrator was amazing at giving all the women their own voices and even the men were distinguishable.

Thanks!!!

I’m…Almost…There…

Is it Friday yet? I’ve been so ready for the weekend that Friday can’t get here fast enough. I have lots of book choices but I’m getting ready to listen to The Strange Case of the Alchemist’s Daughter by Theodora Goss. I have the discs from the library and I am so ready to listen to something new! 1strangecasemain

My son and I are also beginning the BBC show Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell and we are loving it so far! I didn’t realize just how long each episode was! But now I have to wait for him to come back after the summer to finish it out! UGH! Ah well. I think I can hold out until August. Hopefully.

Until next time!

Oh! Another one!

The_Doctor_Hello

Who knew I would be on THE NEXT DAY?! Crazy stuff, I tell ya.

Wanted to quick update and say not only have I been reading a ton, but I got a new job! I’m excited because it’s also a promotion and I start VERY soon! So while I hope to get a lot of reading in this summer, I am very aware that I will be super busy at this new place. But no worries, I will not leave you behind. NOT AGAIN!!!

I think my next book will be something fun. I have a lot to choose from as I’ve just been to the library so I will let you know my choice soon!

Adios!

The Alice Network…and sorry??

facepalm

Oops! I definitely did not mean to go so long between posts! It’s been almost a month! Time sure does fly when you’re…staying busy?? The last month has been pretty crazy but let us get to the nitty gritty, eh?

The Alice Network

My book club finished this one and OMG was it one of the best books I’ve read all year! There were, of course, some problems (looking at you, Charlie St. Clair) but for the most part, it was a very engaging read.

The backdrop of both the Great War and the aftermath of WWII make for suspense, high energy and yet somber thought and slow pacing, as we read the story from two ladies lives. We have Eve, a spy in the Alice Network during the Great War. Her story was, by far, the most incredible, edge of your seat action packed adventure, that really made you want to know how she became the embittered old woman that Charlie meets. Then you have Charlie, this American semi-socialite who is being sent overseas because of a Problem (yes, it’s capitalized) that has to be taken care of. Her story, to me, while not very engaging, did sort of have its very own take off and climax with resolution. It just happened to late in the book for me. So I never really was engaged with her or her story at all.

For me, Eve was the real hero. This was, after all, a story based on REAL women, the REAL Alice Network. Those women had balls. They did what had to be done so that the war could be won. They deserve to be honored everyday, I think.

For more of my thoughts on this amazing novel, check out my Goodreads review here.

Now, this is going to be a long blog post if I don’t end it now, but I have been reading a ton more lately and just finished both the series (or where the series has ended so far) Saga, as well as the remainder of the Themis Files triology, Waking Gods and Only Human. All of these have kept me on my toes and deep in the sci-fi and fantasy world, where I needed to go to escape the realness of The Alice Network.

Keep up with me here and on Goodreads and until next time!

see ya

Mother’s Day

Today is a special day for me. It’s a day that I get once a year, when my kid decides to listen to me and do everything I say!

Ha! Yea, right. But he does buy me flowers and a card and some chocolate and that’s honestly all that matters. I love this kid. He’s amazing.

Happy Mother’s Day, everyone!

The End!!

Ok let’s face it….I took a nap and missed my alarm. BUT I am proud of how much reading I DID accomplish that I’m totally ok with this.

Tell me if you finished the whole 24 hours or just finished some personal goals.

Thanks for participating!!!

My Eyes Are Blurry

Guys. I just finished a 613 page book. Obsidio by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. Seriously the best conclusion for the trilogy I could have asked for. I’ll post a review under a different page, but this was such an accomplishment for me! I’m so glad I knocked another book off my to read list! Not that I will ever be able to completely be done with it in my lifetime, but hey, it’s a start!

This is hour 8, and it was a Sprint, so I finished about 400 pages in 45 minutes and WOW if that’s not the craziest thing! I was so excited I had to make a post because now my eyes are hurting. And I’m wearing glasses. This is crazy.

So what does your progress look like today?

What?? Hour 6 already?!?

Where did the time go?! Did you take a breather? Get some water? Did you do any of the mini challenges on http://www.24hourreadathon.com/? It’s been a fun day for me, but it’s coming to a close for a few since I have to go play mom for a bit and get the kid from the science thing I sent him to! He’ll be sure to tell me all about the fun he had, so I can’t wait!

Let me know in the comments how you’re doing on this readathon day!
